Shoppers flood back into Sunderland as many stores reopen their doors

Monday, June 15, marked the first time non-essential shops have been allowed to open since they were ordered to close in March as part of the Government’s coronavirus lockdown.

The Bridges and other shops in the city centre have put measures in place aimed at keeping people safe.

Hundreds waited outside Sunderland’s Primark store ready for it to open at 9am, with the first in the queue waiting from 6.30am for the chance to browse its rails again, while hundreds more waited outside Sports Direct ready to shop.

Many were looking to replace basic items such as pyjamas and workwear, but many said they headed out just to see other people and shop in person, rather than online, for the first time in months.

Among the first in the queue for Primark were partners Kyle NcNee, 21, and Alicia Baker, 20, who started waiting from 7.45am.

Alicia said: “I’m looking forward to going in, it’s just for a change and I’m looking forward to getting some new stuff.”

Sharon Dring, 57, from South Shields, has worked 12-hour shifts as a carer during the lockdown.

She said: “I’ve never been out during the lockdown and this is my one day off.

“It's just good to see different people, other than colleagues or service users.”

Kathleen Alderson, 67, was in the company of daughter-in-law Jacqueline Alderson, 44, both from Seaham.

Kathleen, a retired domestic who worked at Hopewood Park, said: “I just wanted to get out because I’m sick of being in the house.”

Jacqueline added: “I came out for a break and to get some things for my family and like anybody, I want to grab a bargain.”

Kayleigh Hope, 33, from Plains Farm, headed to TK Maxx after shopping in Primark.

“It was really calm when you got inside and everyone was staying socially distanced,” said Kayleigh, who works at Goals.

“I think it's good to see some faces, but it still feels abnormal to be out.”
