However, the Durham-born businessman is determined to make a success of his venture, Walton & Sutherland, and is looking forward to it reaching its full potential when non-essential retail can reopen.

After three unsuccessful attempts since March 2020, Jack opened his boutique in Ushaw Historic House & Gardens on December 29, before Tier 4 and subsequent lockdown restrictions were imposed.

Famed for its Georgian and Victorian Gothic architecture, the former Ushaw College was founded in 1808 and Jack says its ornate features are a perfect fit for his luxury brand.

He says he also wanted to open his business in his home city, whose heritage has helped inspire the brand’s concept.

He said: "After a difficult year for everyone, and plenty of challenges for ourselves, we were delighted to finally be able to welcome existing and new customers in store.

"To say we’re devastated that after just two days, and seeing our customers during that time, we had to close is an understatement. We’ve been positive all the way through and although this is our third attempt at opening, we were all still in very good spirits and look forward to welcoming our loyal clientele after these restrictions have ended.”

The boutique will offer an appointment only experience, which enables customers to browse the latest collections and enjoy a personal service for their made-to-measure clothing, guided by one of the store’s experienced tailors and stylists.
