Cinema chain Cineworld, which has four branches in the North East, has revealed plans to reopen all 127 UK sites in May as Covid-19 restrictions ease.

In October last year, Cineworld confirmed that it was closing all UK sites until further notice as the Covid-19 pandemic forced further delays to movie releases.

Now the cinema chain has revealed plans to reopen its 127 outlets, including four North East sites, from May 17 in accordance with the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

Bosses have also revealed that they will open cinemas in the United States under its Regal brand from April 2 – following six months of closure.

Chief executive Mooky Greidinger said: “We have long-awaited this moment when we can welcome audiences back to our Regal theatres and restore our essential role within the communities we serve.

“With capacity restrictions expanding to 50% or more across most US states, we will be able to operate profitably in our biggest markets.

“We will also be monitoring developments closely in the UK and across Europe as we set to gradually reopen across the world in line with local government guidance.”

Mr Greidinger added: “This agreement shows the studio’s commitment to the theatrical business and we see this agreement as an important milestone in our 100-year relationship with Warner Bros.”

The exact reopening dates for the four North East cinemas in Boldon, Dalton Park in Murton, Middlesbrough and Newcastle is currently unknown.
