17 independent coffee shops in Sunderland and Seaham you can enjoy takeout with a friend when lockdown eases from March 8

Restaurants and cafes still can’t open for sit-in custom as part of the restrictions imposed to combat Covid-19 – but from March 8 we will be allowed to meet a friend in public and enjoy a takeaway coffee.

There’s plenty of independent coffee shops in Sunderland and Seaham offering a takeout service of their drinks, sweet treats and more. As part of our ongoing #SupportLocal campaign, we’ve rounded up some suggestions of places to try. To have your business added to the guide email [email protected]

After being closed for the past few weeks due to Lockdown, CoffeeHaus has reopened its doors for quality coffees and a great range of pastries and cakes. Its current opening hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Funky Beach, beneath House of Zen, stocks colourful cakes and truffles by Sunderland-based Whipped Goods Co, as well as a great choice of hot drinks. You can also pick up hearty comfort foods, such as homemade gammon broth and hot beef in gravy bap.
People out for a walk with a friend along the seafront will be glad to hear that Fausto has reopened for coffees, snacks and takeaway lunches. Make sure to try the bagels!
The Train Line has opened at the former Seaburn News at Seaburn Metro Station. Expect a whole range of colourful cakes and tray bakes, as well a American brand pops, fudges and more. They also do their own brand coffee.
Flamingo remains open for take away versions of its clean eating menus. There's a great range on offer including brunches, granola bowls, protein shakes, loaded sweet potatoes, coffees and more. Make sure to try the signature Flamingo superfood latte! It's open Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and on weekends from 10am to 3pm. You can pre-order for click and collect through its app. Walk up orders also taken.
For an excellent range of craft ales, natural wines, artisan donuts and coffee head to The Little Shop, next door to Mexico 70. As well as being open for take out, you can order online for deliveries on Thursdays and Fridays at thelittleshop.uk. Click and collect is available too.
No trip to Roker is complete without a trip to Sue's. Call in for ice creams, chips, teas, Bovril and more at really fair prices.
If you're heading off for a walk along Seaburn and Whitburn, you can pick up a hot drink at the hatch at YOLO coffee at the main entrance to STACK, which is open 8am to 5pm. (Check it social pages for changes). The rest of STACK's traders are also running a click & collect service of its street food at later times of the day.
The Snow Goose at Roker Marina is offering a full menu for takeout including coffee, cakes, sandwhiches , quiches, pies and scones.
Hideout is the perfect place to get a takeaway coffee to warm you up on a walk down the beach. There's also a reduced food menu available to go.
For pink slices, cookies and some of the best coffee around, head to Grinder near University Metro Station, which is open 8am to 4pm. They also have a small homewares section in store selling locally-made products, from terrazzo trays by Terra Homeware to candles from On My Wick.
You needn't miss out on Love Lily's pancakes, brunches and cakes. They're open for take aways, seven days a week from 9am to 4pm. Tel 0191 565 6329 for pre-orders. No walk ins.
For some proper comfort food, tuck into some Roker End Cafe food. Options include macaroni in a pot, burgers, breakfasts, loaded fries, nachos and more. Find them on Just Eat, phone in your order on Tel: 0191 565 4422 and collect from the hatch.
For a lunchtime treat try Cole in Roker which is open Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 5pm. The inventive menu changes regularly and includes options such as butternut squash and red lentil soup and salt beef sourdough. No walk ins in Lockdown 3. Call ahead to order and collect on Tel: 07517 717780.
Paticake Patisserie offers some of the most colourful cakes around, as well as pastries, pizzas and coffee. It's open seven days a week from 10am Monday to Saturday and from 11am on Sundays.
For healthy options that are full of flavour, Clean Bean is open Wednesday to Sunday for takeaway and delivery. Pre-order online and choose your delivery slot. Opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 9am to 2pm and 6pm to 9pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
The Mad Hatter is staying open to serve its usual menu, including favourites such as lasagne and chocolate marbled cheesecake, as take out. They've also added a new deli counter.
