It’s the busiest day of the year for most chippies as people partake in the annual Easter tradition, and this year looks set to be no different. Plenty of fish and chip shops will be open across the city, just make sure to adhere to social distancing when queueing.
Here’s a selection to try, in no particular order.
1. Queens Cafe, Dykelands Road, Seaburn
Winner of the Sunderland Echo Chip Shop of the Year 2019, as voted for by readers, Queens Cafe is back open after the Lockdown with a number of new additions to the menu including Tattie Twisters. Photo: JPI Media
2. Downey's, various locations in Sunderland and Seaham
Downey's has been hugely popular in Lockdown and its branches in Seaham, Roker, Seaburn, Barnes, Pallion and Rainton will be keeping people well fed on Good Friday with chippy teas flying out the doors. Photo: JPI Media
3. The Seaburn Bay, Bents Road
For proper chips, made with beef dripping, try The Bay. Their battered curry chip butties are also worth checking out. They're currently offering 20% off their menu for NHS, ambulance, police and the fire service. Provide ID at point of order. Photo: JPI Media
