Seafood & Steak Co has transformed three neighbouring units at the front of the shipping container village to bring something different to the seafront.

The old Posh Street Food and Game Cabin units and the extended seating area at Downey’s have been merged to create the sit-in venture, which can cater for 36 covers.

It’s been a £200,000 investment by the Downey family who own a string of fish and chip shops and restaurants in the area, including Seaham, Roker, Barnes and West Rainton.

The Downey’s branch at Stack remains, and still has some tables for sit in, however, the family’s new venture has an identity of its own.

As the name would suggest, Seafood and Steak Co specialises in seafood, most of which is from Sunderland Fish Quay shop, as well as steaks, making it one of the few steakhouses in the city.

Signature dishes also include lobster thermidor, mussels, on the bone marrow, hake and more, with a lunchtime, a la carte and kids’ menu available, as well as Sunday lunch.

City businessman Glen Downey said: “Sunderland is our home city and we wanted to create something for Sunderland to be proud of. The feedback from our opening weekend was amazing - so it seems that people already feel that way.”

Speaking about how the new venture, which has created 15 new jobs, came about, he said: “We’ve been part of Stack since day one and when these neighbouring units at the front became available, rather than just extending the chippy, we decided to create an out and out restaurant.

Glen added: “Stack remains popular four years since it opened and I think that’s because it has something for everyone. This only adds to that with a fine dining offering. People say it doesn’t even feel like you’re sitting in the Stack because it’s so different.”
