It’s set to be a bumper summer of fun in the city – and here’s some of the highlights.
5. Discovery Zoo, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens
Discovery Zoo will be at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens on Fridays 4 August and 25 August with sessions at 11am, 1pm and 2.30pm. Meet the creatures from Discovery Zoo including a Carolina corn snake, Giant African millipede, Harlequin gecko and Costa Rican zebra tarantula and find out about their behaviour and habitats around the world.

6. WWT Washington Wetland Centre
There's a whole host of activities taking flight at WWT Washington Wetland Centre over the summer including daily flamingo and otter talks, pond dipping, animal tracking, mini beast hunting and den building. See the wwt.org.uk website for more. Photo: Stu Norton
7. Big Science Workshops, National Glass Centre
Big Science Workshops take place at National Glass Centre on 25 July – 10am, 12 August – 10am, 19 August – 10am and 31 August – 10am.
Children will do their own experiments such as slime, sherbet making, Film Canister Rockets plus more. There will also be some exciting Big Science demonstrations to enjoy too.

8. Fireman Sam Live: Sam Saves the Circus, The Fire Station
The Fire Station is the perfect venue for Fireman Sam Live: Sam Saves the Circus which has two performances at 12noon and 3.30pm on August 5. Join Sam, Penny, Elvis, Station Officer Steele and Norman in an all-singing, dancing, action-packed show. Become a fire-fighter cadet and then watch the magic of the circus in Pontypandy.
