Sunderland finally secured their first win of the Premier League season today.

They did it the hard way too, with Steven Pienaar sent off. Goals from Victor Anichebe, on his first league start, and Jermain Defoe did the damage, kick-starting the Black Cats’ campaign, with Hull next up in a fortnight.

Here’s how some SAFC fans reacted on Twitter.

@LiamAngus: We win one football match and the city goes crackers! Fireworks going off everywhere!

@johnsafc87: So we get double points for that long awaited win!!

@LBarks72: VictorAnichebe absolutely unplayable today , same again next time

@BlackcatsLee25: we’re on our wayyyyy

@WaiteJourno: Grinning like an absolute idiot. We’ve scored more goals than the other team in a game of football. Gerrin.

@StuartForster: So the David Moyes guys Sunderland fans were readying for bonfires can be given a pout & wisp of hair & converted to Donald Trump?

@Jonny_Shurben: BIG VIC. KEYS TO THE CITY.

@_JayLloyd: We’ve only gone and won the game when the manager is in the stands!!!

@hewey1976: Great to get the 1st win of the season for #safc especially after such horrible refereeing. King should’ve been sent off twice!

@stevenmilburn1: I can put #MOTD back on series record now haha

@chrissafc1983: Moyes touchline ban & Rodwell injured = first league win of season for Sunderland... Coincidence??? #safc pleased for the travelling fans

@christoph_21: Unsure how #SAFC have won that other than Anichebe being excellent, Pickford pulling off a genuine world class save and Papy not looking pap

@macallenoch: At long last Sunderland have won. My eye get rough rough. Shout saa loose my voice

@GordonScorer: Well done VictorAnichebe. Power, passion, graft and skill.

@waynegillissftm: tweetsomethinglike my flabber is well and truly gasted

@alice_orr96: Much better performance today, buzzing to finally take our first win and with only 10 men, well done lads, let’s kick on from here

@KielTulloch: International break now too time to get some players back then beat Hull and go above them

@rickymac73: Brilliant spirit shown there to come out with the win. Anichebe was fantastic throughout

@matthewjhsn: Waiting for that full time whistle was absolutely disgusting. WE WON A GAME. Outstanding

@PaddyFaz: Anichebe and Defoe. The new Quinn and Phillips. Tears in my eyes

@Ramos99FTM: Just shows you what a bit of Fight Passion and Belief can do. With a little bit of Luck

@gxorgina16: fans finally got what they deserved and on the longest away journey for the season

@Mightquinn10: Lets all have a disco, lets all have a disco

@D_Heslop81: Man of the match has to be Jack Rodwell for not playing!

@ChrisReay_: Beat Hull next and we are right back in the mix!!

@niall_bromley: VictorAnichebe unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable, top top class performance lad! More of that until the end please

@TMALBRGHTN: Cant wait for Lamine Kone to tweet & pretend he cares when he wasnt even watching Defoes penalty

@mksavage73: We won!!! #safc and what a win it was with 10 men! Never write us off! Hull at home next!

@MaloyJordan: A) when was the last time we won after conceding first? B) when was the last time we won a game after going down to 10 men

@williamsSAFC: Outstanding performance today from @VictorAnichebe - exactly what we have been lacking

@afcbjamie: Sunderland deserved that 100%. Fans incredible & don’t deserve to be where they’re. That’s what fans should be

@FanExperienceCo: I only watch #MOTD when #SAFC win. So that usually means once before Christmas, once before Easter and then every Saturday after that

@marco_ten: Proper forward play from @VictorAnichebe brave from the manager to play an extra forward but he was immense!

@Phantomrasberry: send them to nissan every week! Realise how privileged they are!

@IanParkin20: Great result today , got to beat hull next game to close gap on the teams above to stand a chance of staying up tho
