WITH just hours remaining until the 2012 summer transfer window slams shut, it’s a good time to look back over the last four deadline days:
•Following his Arsenal side’s thorough schooling by Manchester United the previous Sunday, Arsene Wenger woke with a start, and promptly began flinging money in every direction on deadline day.
•Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, Yossi Benayoun and Andre Santos were brought in as a result, with varying success. In other news, Raul Meireles joined Chelsea and Owen Hargreaves hobbled across Manchester to join City, following his release by United.
•Harry Redknapp’s face presumably lit up like a dog given an especially juicy bone as he was presented with Rafael Van der Vaart for a cut-price £8 million, as previous deadline day superstar Robinho shuffled quietly out of the Premier League, joining AC Milan from Manchester City.
•A very quiet one this, with Jim White trying in vain to get everyone excited over Richard Dunne’s switch from Man City to Aston Villa. In other news, Harry Redknapp cemented his reputation as a definitely-not-in-any-way-a-wheeler-dealer by picking up Niko Krancjar from financially stricken Portsmouth for a bargain £2.5 million.
•A much tastier deadline day four years ago, as Robinho shocked the footballing world, and possibly himself by rocking up at Manchester City (before it was cool).
•Last-minute drama also ensued at Old Trafford, with Dimitar Berbatov finally competing a £30 million transfer after flirting with Alex Ferguson all summer. Meanwhile, Marouane Fellaini and his fantastic hair joined Everton for a combined fee of around £15 million.
