Thousands of people turned out in force to enjoy Seaham Carnival on what turned out to be a beautiful weekend of sunshine.

The annual event brought out families and groups of friends to enjoy a range of activities including films and live music staged on the town’s seafront.

The carnival, which kicked off on Friday evening on Terrace Green, runs until late tonight.

Friday’s event started on Terrace Green with an open air screening of Footloose, followed by Billy Elliot.

Yesterday, crowds were treated to screenings of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, followed by a performance by Seaham Music Academy, before Star Wars: The Force Awakens was screened.

The features were chosen by residents in the run-up to the event, which is run by Seaham Town Council.

A host of bands were also lined up to play on over the course of the weekend, including headliners Shine On, a Pink Floyd tribute act.

Mum Joanne Hubbard, 38, a support worker from Easington, was at the event with her friends and family.

She said: “We go every year and the kids love coming here for the rides and crafts.

“It’s been such a lovely day and the weather has been fantastic.”

Deputy town clerk Paul Fletcher said: “We are delighted with the great family atmosphere at the carnival and everyone has been out enjoying the sunshine and all the different entertainment.”
