A Sunderland climber has been left fighting for his life after suffering serious head injuries in a fall.

The 28-year-old had been climbing in Steel Rig Once Brewed in Northumberland when he fell at about 3.30pm, today.

He was treated at the scene for life-threatening head injuries by paramedics from Great North Air Ambulance and HART (Hazard Area Response Team) as well as first aiders from Northumbria Mountain Rescue.

He was airlifted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Hospital where he was in a "critical but stable" condition.
