Redz is the plaice to be after being named Wearside’s best fish and chip shop for the second year in a row.

The Washington Galleries eaterie has scooped the highly coveted title of Sunderland Echo Chippy of the Year.

It is fantastic to win for the second year running. We just want to say a big ‘thank you’ to all of our customers who have been so supportive.

The win comes 12 months after its previous incarnation - at Barnes roundabout - picked up the very same award.

Owner George Redford is over the moon at having beaten the rest of Wearside’s cafes and takeaways to the trophy for the second time in a row.

“It is a really good achievement,” he said.

“It is fantastic to win for the second year running. We just want to say a big ‘thank you’ to all of our customers who have been so supportive.

“It’s brilliant.”

For George, customer service is key - the shop is open from 9am to 6pm throughout the week, but stays open til 8pm on Friday - when it even does home deliveries.

We drew up a shortlist of dozens of Wearside’s best fish and chip takeaways and restaurants and invited readers to pick their favourite.

You didn’t let us down, and we were overwhelmed by the response.

But when all the votes were in, there was no doubt you figured Redz was batter than all the rest.

George is delighted the business has retained its loyal customer base despite the move to its new home in the Galleries food court.

“We had the shop at the Barnes and we won the Chippy of the Year title , which was great,” said George.

“Since then we have moved to the Galleries and it has been absolutely great.

“I have been trying to get in here for about three-and-a half years.

“I want to thank my wife Wendy, son Brad, manageress Sharon and staff Sue and Claire.”
