The driver of a car involved in a collision with a bus was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, police have today confirmed.

The elderly driver of the car was airlifted to hospital.

Today, Monday, March 16, Northumbira Police has confirmed he suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Nobody on the bus was seriously hurt in the crash, but police say two people did suffer minor injuries.

Washington Road was closed for more than five hours on Friday as emergency services attended the incident.

Witnesses reported seeing collision investigation teams at the scene.

The Great North Air Ambulance had landed at 11.17am and transported a patient to hospital.

North East Ambulance Service sent three Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART), two double-crewed ambulances and a specialist paramedic, with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service also attending.
