Gold, silver and gems in Sunderland: Family-run jewellers announces massive pre-Christmas retirement sale

S.L. Witten and Sons, the family-run jewellers in Vine Place, Sunderland, has been selling beautiful high quality jewellery for over 60 years.

The business started out as a simple watch repairers in Low Row. Stephen Witten’s sons, Steve and Paul, however, had vision and soon turned it into a thriving jewellery business.

In 1972 the brothers bought their new premises in Vine Place where they quickly built up a reputation for excellent service and quality. They employed a number of staff and became a recognised name in Sunderland town centre.

Steve’s sons Philip and Mark joined the business a few years later, and, after Paul and Steve retired, with the help of long-standing salesman Geoffrey Appleby, they maintained the high standard of service that customers had come to expect when making a visit to Witten’s.

The shop has served the people of Sunderland across generates with engagement, wedding and eternity rings, anniversary gifts and bespoke diamond jewellery. With a sense of pride, Witten’s has built up a following of loyal customers over its many years in business.

But now Philip and Mark are reaching retirement age. The time has come to say goodbye, and they have decided to close up shop this Christmas.

Philip said: “My family has thoroughly enjoyed working in this trade and I have been proud to be part of three generations of jewellers in this city. It will be very sad to see the shop go. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers and say a fond farewell.

“We have chosen Christmas as a fitting time to close our doors. It will be quite an emotional time for us, but we are looking forward to retirement.”

S. L. Witten and Sons will be closing at the end of December. Their final weeks of trading provide customers with a great opportunity to purchase jewellery from Witten’s, as all stock is being sold off at greatly reduced prices.
