Traditionally most people received dental care from a local NHS dentist, but increasingly limited availability and long waiting times mean that people are considering another route.

Private doesn’t always mean prohibitively expensive, especially with dental plans and spread payment options; but what does a private clinic offer?

At City Dental in Sunderland it’s everything from a scale and polish or annual check-up, to complicated restorative and conservation dentistry, neither of which are routinely available on the NHS. This could include implants, crowns and smile makeovers.

This clinic – which has its own in-house laboratory – has a team of fully qualified dentists, dental nurses and hygienists ready to offer treatment, and trained technicians who can create implants, crowns, and dentures in house. The net effect is that for people in and around South Tyneside there’s affordable, accessible treatment, when you want it.

City Dental is owned by Colin Caster and Mark Maley. Colin, a dental technician, says: “We all love and value the NHS, but the reality is that for many people the system doesn’t have the flexibility they need. Often there are very long waiting lists to be seen, or when people relocate they can really struggle to find an NHS dentist accepting new patients.

“Taking care of your teeth shouldn’t come with long waiting times, and if you need emergency treatment – for example if you break a tooth or are in pain with an infection – the added worry of finding suitably qualified help can be a strain.

“We like to think we are there to give people a choice, and to offer a service that has appointments available when they want them, and which can move those appointments when unexpected events happen. Even simple things like swapping appointment times to accommodate family holidays, can be tricky when you are on a long NHS waiting list.”

Beyond the NHS

City Dental can also offer services the NHS can no longer support, such as restorative and conservation dentistry, which is pro-active work to help conserve the functionality and look of the teeth you have, and keep them healthy for longer. This can include adding in implants and partial dentures to support remaining teeth, keeping you smiling.

Colin added: “Our colleagues in the NHS provide vital services, while working with extremely limited resources. We are proud that we can offer every range of option a patient could hope to choose from, as well as offering routine care for all the family.”
