Along with Roman, medieval and viking displays, the event will also feature a number of activities showcasing North East history from the 1st Century all the way to the Second World War, providing an educational twist to the historic attractions.

Lily Hannington, one of the organisers of the Sunderland History and Heritage Festival, said: “Events like this are incredibly important, not just in attracting visitors to the region but also making people aware of what is on their doorstep.

More and more families are finding days out and children’s activities to be an expense that they have to really consider. We pride ourselves on providing a very low-cost day out, with none of the activities costing more than £3.”

“With more families than ever opting for ‘staycations’ bringing something a little different to an established attraction is something we love doing.”

The family-friendly event will also give children the chance to take part in one hour long challenges designed to be a fun way to pass on some of the history that has shaped the region.

Lily is confident the event will also prove beneficial to the local community.

She said: “We really aim to bring a good, educational and fun day out to the local community and hope we can engage as many of them as possible”

The event takes place across bank holiday weekend on August 24, 25 and 26. The museum is open from 10am to 5pm.
