Sunderland illuminations 2020: Where and when you can see the illuminations this year

The annual tradition of Sunderland Illuminations is already underway, however the are some changes to this year’s event.

The yearly event, which started in 1936, sees families enjoying bright lights and attractions along Sunderland’s seafront however the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has meant there have been some changes.

Despite the disruption, this year’s event is already underway and we’ve put together a guide to ensure that you don’t miss anything.

Where can I see the illuminations?

The lighting has been installed all the way along Roker Terrace and Whitburn Road and the route is just one straight line so you won’t miss a thing.

Just ensure to wrap up as the winter nights draw in and maintain social distancing with others when out and about.

What time are the the illuminations on?

There is no official start time, the lights will be visible as it begins to get dark and will remain switched on throughout the night, meaning there will be plenty of time to enjoy them.

How long are the illuminations on for?

This year’s event has already been running since Friday, October 9.

Sunderland City Council have confirmed that they will remain on until early 2021.

The lights be switched off on Sunday, November 8 (Remembrance Sunday) as a mark of respect.

Is the Festival of Light going ahead this year?

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there is no Festival of Light this year.

In previous years, it has been held at both Roker Park and Mowbray Park but in order to keep the public safe, Sunderland City Council cancelled the event.

Are there any events running along the illuminations?

This means no vendors selling merchandise or the big ferris wheel which is usually based at Cliffe Park.

As there is no official event, you do not have to buy tickets to enjoy the illuminations.
