Here’s a guide to trails across the region, from new festivals to one featuring the North’s largest Christmas tree.
5. Durham Lumiere, November 16-19
It's one of the most spectacular events on the North East's culture calendar - and excitement is building for what's being billed as the biggest Lumiere yet. More than 40 installations will be lighting up Durham for the return of the bi-annual festival, which takes place this year from November 16-19, from 4.30pm-11pm each night. It is free to attend for everyone and tickets are only required to enter Durham city centre during peak hours between 16:30-19:30. 6. Forest of Light, Beamish Hall Hotel
The popular Forest of Light returns to the grounds of Beamish Hall Hotel in County Durham with various dates throughout November and December 2023 and January 2024.

7. Christmas Kingdom, Bamburgh Castle,
Northumbrian myths and legends will inspire theatrical designer Charlotte Lloyd-Webber’s magical festive creation at Bamburgh Castle this year, one of the biggest indoor spectacles of its kind. Follow the Christmas Kingdom trail around the castle from Saturday 11 November – Sunday 7 January, daily from 10am – 4pm.

8. The Plotters’ Forest Enchanted Christmas Trail, Raby Castle, from November 18
The Plotters Forest attraction at Raby Castle, County Durham, is hosting an outdoor trail with both day and night ticket options from November 18. Twinkling lights and festive music guide your path through the winter wonderland. Day Tickets are selected times between 10am and 2pm and include use of The Plotters' Forest play equipment, Christmas trail and a special treat for the children. This ticket also include access into the Deer Park anytime in between 10am and 4pm.
