The days are short and the weather is colder than ever, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the delights of the North East.
Sunderland and the surrounding areas are alive with rich colours throughout the year, particularly in autumn and winter, so wrap up warm, lace up your best walking shoes and check out these 8 walks in and around Sunderland before the weather warms up again.
5. Souter Lighthouse
The National Trust also recommends a trip to Souter Lighthouse to follow the coastal path and see a series of non migratory birds nesting in the nearby cliffs as well as the nearby Trow Quarry. Anyone looking to extend their walk can head up the coast to Marsden Grotto for a warm meal. Photo: Stu Norton
6. Gibside Hall
Further afield, Gibside Hall is another route recommended by the National Trust. The group suggest the site thanks to the wide-range of paths available offering more simple, family friendly walks to longer hikes off the beaten track. Photo: Google
7. Barnes Park
Barnes Park is another easily accessible option in Sunderland. The park can look stunning in the snow and features a small cafe, childrens play area and plenty of peace and quiet! Anyone looking for a longer walk can head to the west end of the park and head into the extension of the park which runs towards Grindon and Hastings Hill. Photo: Stu Norton
8. Backhouse Park
A perfect place to step away from the bustle of everyday life, Backhouse Park has entrances in Ashbrooke and Ryhope Road and is a perfect open space for runners, dog walkers and anyone who just wants to get out of the house for a while. Photo: Stu Norton
