As 2019 draws to a close, we've rounded up some of the best gigs, events and spectacles to take place over the last ten years.
5. Dizzee Rascal, Split Festival, 2014
Sadly, it was to be the last Split Festival, but 2014 saw headliner Dizzee Rascal bring a huge laser show to Mowbray Park. He appeared on a bill alongside Maximo Park, The Cribs and home-grown talent Frankie & the Heartstrings. Photo: JPI Media
6. Pages of the Sea, Roker Beach, November 2018
'Words fail me on a day like today, but it makes me feel proud to be from Sunderland' - the poignant statement from veteran Len Gibson, 98, as he gathered with thousands of others at Sunderland's Pages of the Sea event in November 2018. Roker Beach was one of a handful of beaches nationally to be chosen for director Danny Boyle’s striking poignant art work. The central portrait of the event, which was commissioned by 14-18 NOW to mark the centenary of Armistice Day, was of fallen Houghton soldier 2nd Lt Hugh Carr who died in the Ypres salient in January 1916 when a German shell landed near his trench. 7. Coldplay, Stadium of Light, June 2012
Not everyone's cup of tea musically, but Coldplay put on an incredible spectacle when they played the home of the Black Cats in 2012 - despite the rain. Wristbands worn by the crowd pulsated in tune to the music and turned the Stadium of Light into a giant glitter ball. Photo: Submitted
8. The Lightning Seeds, Sunniside Live Fan Zone, July 2018
It was perfect timing when The Lightning Seeds, famed for their Three Lions anthem, were booked to play Sunniside Live in the same summer England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. A Fan Zone was set up within the festival so crowds could still enjoy the match. As the festival drew to a close the capacity crowd of 4,000 joined in a Three Lions singalong. Photo: Tim Richardson
