With its stunning sandy beaches and miles of open countryside to explore, England’s northernmost county has plenty to offer.
Here are 15 things you should do when you’re on holiday in Northumberland.
1. Head for the beach
Over-crowding as seen at Brighton and Bournemouth isn't something Northumberland has to worry about - even at its hotspots like Bamburgh (pictured) and Beadnell. The county is blessed with numerous beautiful beaches, from Berwick in the north to Seaton Sluice in the south. Embleton was recently named the most underrated in England. Photo: Jane Coltman
2. Conquer a castle
Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England - a legacy of its turbulent past, including the infamous Border wars.
The likes of Bamburgh Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle have reopened while Alnwick Castle (pictured) is aiming to reopen its grounds for the main holiday season. Photo: Jane Coltman
3. Take a boat trip
Dolphins, grey seals, puffins and much more can often be spotted off the Northumberland coast. Boat trips have resumed from Seahouses harbour and Berwick and while the Farne Islands remain closed at the moment, the National Trust is hoping there may be limited opening later in the summer. 4. Walk Hadrian's Wall
Stretching 73 miles from coast to coast, Hadrian’s Wall was built to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire.
Birdoswald, Corbridge, Chesters and Housesteads Roman fort are now open but tickets need to be pre-booked. Visit www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/hadrians-wall/ Photo: Pixabay
