Cyberpunk 2077: why Sony has pulled the PS4 and PS5 game from the Playstation store - and how to get a refund

Cyberpunk 2077 has been removed from the PlayStation store by Sony - in the latest setback of the highly anticipated game.

After delays during development, the game was finally released by CD Projekt Red on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X consoles and Google Stadia on 10 December.

But since its launch, it has been riddled with glitches and bugs and users have complained about it crashing regularly.

So what happened to Cyberpunk 2077, and can I get a refund?

Why has Cyberpunk 2077 been removed from the PlayStation store?

Cyberpunk 2077 was removed from PlayStation’s digital store after gamers complained about a number of glitches, bugs and frequent crashing.

Glitches tend to revolve around picture quality and frozen gameplay which has frustrated users, with some even having to restart their machines.

The problems have mainly appeared on older versions of the game, played on consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, with newer versions having no such issues.

Why was Cyberpunk 2077 delayed?

Cyberpunk 2077 had been almost a decade in the making before it was finally released on 10 December 2020, following late delays in development.

Gamers were first introduced to the concept in 2012 before it re-emerged in 2018 and featured Keanu Reeves in its promotional material in June 2019.

Initially set for an April 2020 release, it was pushed back to September before its December release, which saw staff crunch to get the game finished.

In a statement released by CD Projekt Red’s co-founder Marcin Iwinski and head of studio Adam Badowski, the developer said more time was needed to “finish playtesting, fixing and polishing”. They went on to say they wanted Cyberpunk 2077 to be its “crowning achievement”.

How do I get a refund?

Sony has pulled both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game from its PlayStation store.

“SIE strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, therefore we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store. SIE will also be removing Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store until further notice,” the company said.

Players wishing to get a refund for their Cyberpunk 2077 purchase from the digital store can do so by visiting the PlayStation website.

Developer CD Projekt Red has already apologised for the game’s glitches, offered refunds and is committed to releasing patches to try to fix the problems players are experiencing.

What does the future hold for Cyberpunk 2077?

An updated version of the game is set to be released in 2021, which will be free of charge for people who have already bought this version.

While developer CD Projekt Red is looking to release patches to fix the bugs in January or February.

A statement on the website regarding the patches read: "They won’t make the game on last-gen look like it’s running on a high-spec PC or next gen console, but it will be closer to that experience than it is now."

The game is still available on XBox consoles and PC.
