Teens arrested after man pulled off Metro train and attacked by gang

Metro passengers who witnessed an assault which left a man with a head injury are being urged to help a police inquiry into the gang attack.

The North East Ambulance Service sent a double-crewed ambulance to the scene and a 40-year-old man to South Tyneside District Hospital for further treatment for his injury.

The incident led to the service being halted between the station and South Hylton for 45 minutes.

It happened at 7.45pm on Wednesday, January 27, as the train arrived at East Boldon station.

A 17-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of assault and released under investigation.

A spokesperson for the BTP said: “He was then pulled off the train and further assaulted by a group of people.

“Two people have since been arrested in connection to the incident.”

A Nexus spokesperson said: “Behaviour of this nature is totally unacceptable and we will be supporting the police with their investigation, including with any available CCTV of footage.

“During lockdown people should only be travelling for essential purposes and if you do need to make a journey then you must wear a face covering at all times unless exempt.

“Crime rates on Metro are low, but when offences do occur we do all that we can to ensure those responsible face prosecution.”
