Wearside Bridge Club recently celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a dinner and evening of bridge for over 50 members at its clubhouse in Park Place West.

A raffle in aid of Cancer Research raised more than £500 as part of the English Bridge Union’s “Bridge It’s A Big Deal Week”, intended to promote the game in local communities and raise £60,000 for the charity from events held by bridge clubs throughout the country.

The Wearside club was founded in 1949 and is fortunate to have its own premises, thanks to the original members who purchased the property in the mid-1950s. The club currently has over 100 members and is open six days a week.

Bridge has proven benefits on players’ wellbeing and is a great game for all ages (the club’s youngest member is aged 10 and the eldest member is 98). The club runs regular teaching classes for beginners – details are on the club website (bridgewebs.com/wearside/).
