Former Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy has been sacked by Cypriot side APOEL – just two months after taking the job.

The 61-year-old took charge at the top flight side, who regularly compete in the Europa League, back in November.

He had brought long-term assistant Terry Connor with him and had looked to recruit a number of English players – with Wigan Athletic striker Joe Garner having already put pen to paper.

But he is now looking for a new job after being dismissed just weeks into the new role.

APOEL are known to have little patience with their managers and have opted to part company with McCarthy after the side lost their last four games. The former Ipswich and Wolves boss leaves the side sat in 11th – just one point and place above the relegation zone.

The Cypriot outfit are now looking for their 15th manager in just five years.
