The Black Cats are in the market for a striker or two after the serious injury to Ross Stewart this season, whilst Tony Mowbray could also do with cover and competition for midfielder Corry Evans, who was also ruled out for the rest of the season.
Here, we take a look at some past Sunderland transfer targets and explore whether or not sporting director Kristjaan Speakman and head of recruitment Stuart Harvey could possibly revive their interest.
5. Dion Sanderson - Birmingham City on loan from Wolves
Sunderland are well stocked for defenders but reports have suggested Wolves are willing to sell Sanderson during the summer window. Sanderson is highly thought of at the club and the opportunity could be too good an opportunity to turn down. Photo: Tony Marshall
6. Cameron Archer - Middlesbrough on loan from Aston Villa
Sunderland were in for Cameron Archer in January but the Aston Villa man went on loan to Middlesbrough where he has excelled. A chance in the Premier League could come calling next campaign which would likely rule Sunderland out. Photo: Justin Setterfield
7. Jack Rudoni - Huddersfield Town
Sunderland were extremely keen on Jack Rudoni during the summer before his eventual move to Huddersfield Town. Rudoni has cemented himself as a first-team regular but the Terriers currently find themselves in a relegation battle. Rudoni is a player Sunderland could take another look at in the summer if things continue to go south for Huddersfield. Photo: Tony Marshall
8. Troy Parrott - Preston on loan from Tottenham
Another player Sunderland were heavily linked with in the summer before he joined Preston North End on loan from Tottenham. Troy Parrott could once again become available in the summer with the Championship a likely destination. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall
