Sunderland were pencilled in to return to action in the third round of the Papa John’s Trophy against Port Vale next week.

However, it was announced last night that Lee Johnson’s side will take on potential promotion rivals Hull City this coming Saturday.

The League One fixture will be shown live on Sky Sports, with kick-off at 7:45 pm.

Sunderland’s third tier rivals Fleetwood Town are still yet to appoint a new boss following the sacking of head coach Joey Barton earlier this week.

Interestingly, former Stadium of Light bosses Simon Grayson, Jack Ross, Gus Poyet and Roy Keane have been linked to the vacant role by the bookies.

But there’s also plenty transfer talk ahead of an interesting transfer window for the many clubs up and down the EFL pyramid.

West Ham have reportedly been alerted to Ipswich Town defender Elkan Baggott’s rejection of his first professional contract and will attempt to lure the 18-year-old to the London Stadium. (Football Insider)

Hull City youngster Callum Jones has signed a new contract with the Tigers until the summer of 2023, with the option of a further year. The 19-year-old has made seven appearances for the Tigers since breaking into the first-team squad at the start of the season. (Various)

Doncaster Rovers have signed Barnsley’s 21-year-old highly-rated former Benfica and Sporting Lisbon youngster Elliot Simoes on loan until the end of the season. (Various)
