Lee Burge has started 21 of the Black Cats’ 26 league games this season but was left on the bench during the side’s 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury last time out.

Remi Matthews started between the sticks and made a costly error which led to the Shrews’ equaliser at New Meadow.

Ahead of this weekend’s meeting with Doncaster, we asked supporters who should start in goal for the Black Cats.

Remi Matthews.

Fans have hardly been convinced by Burge or Matthews this season, with many calling for Anthony Patterson to be given a chance.

The 20-year-old has only played for the senior side in the EFL Trophy after coming through the ranks on Wearside.

On our Sunderland Echo SAFC Facebook page, Gavin Mcadam said: Can we not apply for an emergency loan, based on the fact it’s shocking to replace bad with worse?

Tom Woodward replied: Being realistic, Burge

Glyn Hutchinson replied: I would play Patterson but now is the time to see how good a coach Johnson is, remember he had a full transfer window to bring someone in

Tony Bell posted: Seriously though. Got to be Patterson

William Coulthard answered: Play young Anthony Patterson he's got to be better than the other two

Matthew Lone commented: Sunderland need to start with Patterson in goal at weekend

On Twitter, @LukeCostello13 joked: Luke O’Nien, he’s played in every other position, let’s try him in goal!

@KayeThubron tweeted: Has to be Burge, I don’t want to see Matthews in goal for us again! Move Patterson up onto the bench.

@dpgroves6 responded: Has to be Burge! Yes has made mistakes, but overall has a good record! Can't experiment in a big game like this!

@christyzack said: Burge has his faults but Matthews should never play for us again.
