Tony Mowbray’s side took an early lead when Ellis Simms headed them ahead in the 19th minute, yet Latics striker Will Keane equalised three minutes before half-time.
Ross Stewart then came off the bench to restore the visitors’ lead, converting a penalty after Patrick Roberts was fouled in the box.
Roberts then scored his third goal of the season to secure the victory, before a stunning strike from Amad made it four.
Here’s how Phil Smith rated each Sunderland player at the DW Stadium:

9. Jack Clarke - 6
Was diligent in a wing-back role and played his part in the opener with a cross into a dangerous area. Change of shape meant he didn’t get forward as often as normal. 6 Photo: Martin Swinney

10. Amad - 7
Was consistently getting into dangerous areas without being able to find the finishing touch - right up until he produced another goal of the season contender with minutes to play. A stunner. 7 Photo: Frank Reid

11. Ellis Simms - 7
Took his goal well and was involved in some excellent link-up play through the first half an hour. Should have done better when he lost possession in the build up towards Wigan’s goal and faded a little after then. 7 Photo: Martin Swinney

12. Patrick Roberts (sub) - 9
What an outrageously good cameo. Immediately won a penalty, then got a goal and an assist as he picked up clever pockets and tormented Wigan. What a response to dropping out of the side - to his credit Mowbray managed a tiring squad superbly tonight. 9 Photo: Martin Swinney
