Phil Smith’s Sunderland player ratings after the Black Cats’ win over Preston North End.
Sunderland started 2024 with a fine win over Preston North End. Alex Pritchard opened the scoring with a long-range effort and Nazariy Rusyn scored his first Sunderland goal just before half time to give his side a commanding lead.
Preston dominated the second half but created few chances as Sunderland landed a clean sheet.

9. JACK CLARKE
A ridiculous assist for the second goal, scythed down and yet somehow still managing to beat the second defender and cross for Rusyn. Even in games where isn’t totally dominant, he makes huge contributions. 8 Photo: Frank Reid
An outstanding display from Sunderland’s wizard. A constant thorn in Preston’s side as he drifted into dangerous areas from the right wing, and scored a quite brilliant goal to get his side ahead. Quieter in the second half from an attacking perspective but his disciple and pressing was crucial. 9 Photo: FRANK REID
Didn’t always find it easy to impact the game but put in a huge shift and scored an excellent poacher’s goal, bursting across the six-yard box and converting a clever, first-time finish. His only touch in the opposition penalty box and he made it count. 8 Photo: FRANK REID
