Will Grigg responds to questions over his Sunderland future and drops a Wigan Athletic hint amid transfer rumours

The 29-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at MK Dons and netted eight times during a productive loan spell at the League One side.

But as he prepares to return to Wearside ahead of the 2021/22 campaign – with a year remaining on the striker’s contract – Grigg has admitted that he remains unsure as to where he will be plying his trade.

Speaking to German publication Spox – who had asked the striker if he could imagine a move to the continent - Grigg said: “I don't know yet how things will continue in summer.

"But of course, if there is an opportunity to move to Germany, I would definitely be interested.”

One of the clubs linked with a move for the striker are former club Wigan Athletic, and Grigg dropped a hint about a potential return to the DW Stadium when quizzed on his exit from the Latics.

"That was the hardest decision of my life,” he said.

"I didn't intend to move, but when Wigan accepted Sunderland s offer, I agreed.

"Wigan will forever be my heart club. Maybe I'll come back someday.”

On the circumstances that surrounded his move to Wearside, Grigg added: “That was completely surreal.

"Sunderland had been courting me for a long time and submitted a total of four offers, all of which Wigan declined.

"At noon on deadline day it was said that the transfer had finally failed. So I finished with the subject and drove home.

"By 9:30pm I was in my pyjamas and was about to go to sleep when the phone rang. I was told that the clubs had come to an agreement after all and that I should come to the training ground as soon as possible to clear up the formalities.

"So I changed, went there and signed the contract about two minutes before the transfer window closed at 11pm. I had never experienced anything like this before and I don't want to experience it again.”
