Why Kevin Danso can play for Sunderland in Europe despite Bournemouth red card as suspension rules explained

Kevin Danso faces a suspension following his red card against Bournemouth, but Sunderland will still be able to call upon the defender in the Europa League

Sunderland defender Kevin Danso will remain available for Thursday's Europa League clash against Lech Poznań despite being sent off during Sunday's 2-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth.

The Austrian international was dismissed after just 17 minutes at the Vitality Stadium following a foul on Evanilson, who had threatened to race through on goal. Referee Craig Pawson showed Danso a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, with the decision subsequently reviewed and upheld by VAR.

The Premier League Match Centre confirmed: "The referee's call of red card to Danso for denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity (DOGSO) was checked and confirmed by VAR." The decision left Sunderland facing almost the entire contest with ten men, although Danso's resulting suspension will not prevent him from featuring in Europe.

Why can Danso play against Lech Poznań?

Under the disciplinary regulations governing English football, a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity ordinarily carries an automatic one-match suspension. However, domestic and European competitions operate under separate disciplinary systems, meaning the suspension does not extend to UEFA fixtures.

The Football Association's regulations apply domestic red-card suspensions across competitions including the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup, but not the Europa League. UEFA operates its own disciplinary process, with Article 63.01 of its competition regulations governing suspensions following dismissals in European club competitions.

Consequently, Danso remains eligible for Sunderland's Europa League trip to Lech Poznań in Poland on Thursday, October 22, with kick-off scheduled for 5.45pm BST. The distinction provides a welcome boost for Régis Le Bris, whose defensive options are already stretched by injuries.

Which Sunderland game will Danso miss?

Danso is due to serve his automatic one-match suspension when Sunderland return to Premier League action against Leeds United at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, October 25. The defender's absence creates another significant selection headache for Le Bris, particularly with Dan Ballard continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Omar Alderete has also endured a difficult start to the season, leaving the Sunderland head coach with several decisions to make about his defensive partnership. Luke O'Nien represents one potential replacement, having captained Sunderland during their European victory over Torreense last Thursday.

Alternatively, Le Bris could move Nordi Mukiele into central defence, although that would potentially require another reshuffle on the right-hand side. Danso will be eligible to return to domestic action after serving his suspension, provided no additional disciplinary punishment is imposed.

What happens if Danso is booked or sent off in Europe?

UEFA's disciplinary regulations operate independently of domestic competitions, with a different system governing accumulated yellow cards and dismissals. For the 2026-27 season, UEFA increased the threshold for an automatic suspension through accumulated bookings from three yellow cards to four.

Players now receive a one-match European suspension after their fourth yellow card in the league phase, with further suspensions following a sixth, eighth and subsequent even-numbered booking. A straight red card in European competition ordinarily results in a one-match suspension, although UEFA can impose longer punishments for more serious offences. Yellow cards also carry over from the league phase into the knockout rounds, before expiring after the quarter-finals.
