A former player in non-league, Rodwell made the move into off-field matters upon his retirement from the game and took up the role of chairman at Boston United.

He resigned from his role with The Pilgrims after the club were sold in 2007, and subsequently went on to be appointed as chief executive officer at Notts County during a successful spell in their recent history.

While at Meadow Lane, Rodwell spearheaded a number of popular fan-focused initiatives, before departing in 2015 to join Scunthorpe United.

He has been at Glanford Park ever since, before making this switch to the Stadium of Light.

Rodwell has also been a Board Director for both the EFL and Football Association - meaning he brings vast experience to the Stadium of Light.

WHAT WILL HIS JOB BE AT SUNDERLAND?

Rodwell’s role will be to lead on the day-to-day running of the club.

The Black Cats have long been without an off-field figurehead who is permanently based on Wearside, after Tony Davison’s departure.

Rodwell’s appointment, therefore, will provide some much-needed leadership at the Academy of Light and Black Cat House.

The specific remit of his role is unknown, but the club statement announcing his arrival stated that he will aim to ‘ensure ongoing and long-term success’ at Sunderland.

WHAT DOES HIS APPOINTMENT MEAN FOR A TAKEOVER?

A number of supporters have speculated as to whether Rodwell’s appointment is a sign that Sunderland will not be sold in the near future - as previously suggested.

But the club have confirmed that there has been no change in Stewart Donald’s position.

The club statement announcing Rodwell stated: “Whilst the club remains for sale, there is understandably increased uncertainty within global markets and the economy as a whole due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
