He went on to make 108 appearances for the South Lanarkshire side, netting eight times, before sealing a move to Rangers in January 2018.

Things have not gone to plan for Docherty since though, and he has mustered just 19 senior appearances at Ibrox.

The midfielder did, however, impress during a season-long loan spell at Shrewsbury last season - as he scored 10 times in 50 appearances while laying on 11 assists.

He returned to Rangers in the summer, but has struggled to hold down a place in Steven Gerrard’s side - hence the desire to seal a loan move.

Sam Ricketts, who managed Docherty at Shrewsbury last year, was full of praise for the ‘quality’ midfielder - and praised all aspects of his game.

“It is not just his running and his pressing, they are excellent, but his goals and all-round game were terrific,” he said.

“When you have got a player that is willing to put that shift in, that will run you 12km in every game, but also do it at his intensity, that is a major asset to any team.

“With Greg, you have his quality at the end of it and that is what makes him a special player.”
