Portsmouth CEO Mark Catlin admitted on Tuesday that the division is ‘split’ over whether the campaign should be curtailed, and said that he fears the third tier has been left isolated as League Two and the Championship pursue two very different routes.

Catlin believes there is probably a majority for ending the season, but Portsmouth and Sunderland were two of six clubs who went public last Thursday with their desire to continue playing.

An extended play-off campaign was mooted as one way to break the impasse, with Gillingham confirming their willingness to be involved on Tuesday.

Catlin says there is no ‘consensus’ around any solution throughout the division.

“It's split,” he told talkSPORT.

“I'd say those that want to call it a day just about tip the balance in calling the season here, then you do the play-off route, same as League Two.

“What a few clubs having been trying to do, at the invite of the EFL, who have been brilliant throughout this I think, they’re in a horrible position because whatever route they take there's a roadblock, we've been trying to look at some solutions.

“You've heard it all out there, the mini-tournaments, various ways and means of finishing the season.

“Will it succeed? I just don't know because there isn't a consensus in League One.

“Actually, it sums up the widening gap in football.

“You've got the Championship aligning with the Premier League, going in one direction, you've got League Two going with the National League and non-league.

“You've got League One in middle, with the larger teams wanting to edge towards the Championship solution, and at the lower end, they're moving more towards the League Two position.”

Clubs throughotu the division are hoping that the EFL’s meeting on Wednesday could lead to clarity and potentially an indicative vote later in the week.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has been vocal in his desire to resume but insists there is sympathy for those who do not.

“In the EFL meeting last week there was no talk of a vote that day, there was no raised voices, nobody laying the law down," he tweeted.

“Just all clubs having their voices heard regardless of sizes. Talks about current season & future season & issues we all face financially.

“The appetite for most in top half was to play our season out. Majority of other half had no desire to play due to finances which is understandable.

“Ideas were thrown around on how top half can play games to decide fair way to finish, which allowed the clubs not wanting to play to get on with not stressing over contract extensions or financial side of starting up again. EFL chairman said let's all think about it and come up creative ideas to finish the season.”

The EFL will discuss the practicalities of those today.
