Roy Keane’s side came from 2-1 down to claim a vital triumph which put one foot back in the Premier League - thanks in part to THAT famous Carlos Edwards strike.
So where are the heroes of that season now? We take a look at what happened to the memorable side:
5. DEF: NYRON NOSWORTHY
Another fan favourite (this side was full of them!), ‘Nuggsy’ - as he was affectionately known - retired in 2012 and completed his coaching badges. He is yet to step into a full-time role, though. Photo: Ian Walton
6. MID: CARLOS EDWARDS
The scorer of THAT memorable goal, Edwards remains a cult hero among Sunderland supporters. He’s still playing now, as he turns out for non-league side Woodbridge Town at the age of 41. Photo: Christopher Lee
7. MID: LIAM MILLER
A key part of the Sunderland side that clinched promotion, Miller departed the club in 2009. He sadly passed away in 2018 after a illustrious career which saw him represent Manchester United, Celtic and the Republic of Ireland among many others. Photo: Clive Brunskill
8. MID: DEAN WHITEHEAD
Signed from Oxford United, Whitehead developed into a cultured midfielder who spent the majority of his career at the top end of the EFL. He now finds himself in League One - as first-team coach at Shrewsbury Town. Photo: Mark Thompson
