5. Jack Diamond - on loan at Harrogate Town
Much was hoped for Diamond after he burst onto the scene under Johnson with a delightful goal against Lincoln City in December last season but that would be the only time the winger would find the back of the net during an indifferent second half of the campaign. While the talent is clearly in the 21-year-old Johnson made the move in the summer to allow him to head back out on loan to Harrogate where he enjoyed a successful spell with the Sulphurites in 2019. The hope is Diamond can rediscover the kind of form that allowed him to break into the Sunderland starting XI last year. (Photo by Lewis Storey/Getty Images) Photo: Lewis Storey
The saga of Wyke became one of the focal points of Sunderland’s summer after the striker’s deal expired at the Stadium of Light. Wyke produced his most successful season to date last year finding the back of the net on 31 occasions as Sunderland made it to the play-off semi-finals. But the 28-year-old was unable to agree a new deal on Wearside and instead made the switch to Wigan where he has yet to get his name on the scoresheet including during their defeat at the Stadium of Light on the opening day of the season. Dobson became something of a forgotten man after his arrival on Wearside in 2019. The former Walsall captain struggled to cement a place in the starting XI at the Stadium of Light before being sent out on loan to AFC Wimbledon in the second half of last season. The midfielder went on to make 24 appearances at Plough Lane but was once again unable to force himself back into the plans of Johnson this season before joining Charlton on a permanent deal in the summer where he has featured four times so far this term. Despite being signed as cover in the left wingback role, McFadzean became a regular for Sunderland last season due to injuries sustained by Denver Hume and Conor McLaughlin. Initially the former Plymouth Argyle man looked to be a capable stand-in before his form, along with the teams, dipped. Still, McFadzean was able to make 25 appearances for the Black Cats last season scoring his only goal for the club in the 1-1 draw with Lincoln at the Stadium of Light. The fullback left the club in the summer and has since gone on to join David Artell’s Crewe in League One this season. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) Photo: Stu Forster
