The Black Cats can be relegated as early as Saturday, a loss against Burton Albion at the Stadium of Light would all but guarantee relegation, however, anything but a win could mean Sunderland are relegated before they play Fulham next Friday.

Relegation rivals Barnsley, who also have a game in hand, are away to Leeds United, meanwhile Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers have home fixtures against Sheffield United and Wolves.

What will it take for Sunderland to be relegated on Saturday?

With a defeat:

Defeat against Burton would mean that if Bolton and Birmingham both pick up a point, Sunderland would be relegated.

They could also be relegated if Barnsley, who play Nottingham Forest away on Tuesday, pick up three points against Leeds.

With a draw:

If Sunderland draw against Burton, they would be relegated if two of the following happened:

Bolton defeat Wolves

Birmingham defeat Sheffield United

Barnsley defeat Leeds

However, Sunderland could also be relegated if one of Bolton or Birmingham win and Barnsley pick up more than three points between now and Friday.

If they win?

The Black Cats would survive for another day. There is one positive, Sunderland's goal difference (-29) is also better than Bolton (-30) and Birmingham City (-31).
