It’s two years to the day since Sunderland ended their long exile in League One and won promotion back to the Championship.
A huge travelling red-and-white support watched on as goals from Elliot Embleton and Ross Stewart secured a win over Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off final. But what came next for those who featured on the day and where are they now? We run you through, player by player...
13. SUB - NATHAN BROADHEAD
Sunderland agreed a deal to sign the popular forward on a permanent basis in the summer that followed, but Broadhead instead decided to sign a new deal at Everton and go on loan to Wigan. Any chance of that deal being revived in the next window came to a swift end when Ipswich Town put a huge offer on the table. That has worked brilliantly both for themselves and Broadhead, back-to-back promotions meaning he will be a Premier League player next year. That will enhance his international prospects, too. A big missed opportunity for Sunderland though in case, by no means entirely of their own making. | Frank Reid Photo: FRANK REID 2022
14. SUB - DAN NEIL
Had a brilliant first half of the campaign under Lee Johnson but lost his place under Neil, who felt he needed a break and also wanted to add some more defensive solidity to his midfield. The 22-year-old responded superbly to that spell on the sidelines and has been a regular in the side ever since. | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid
15. SUB - JACK CLARKE
Was a surprise exclusion from the starting XI for this game in order to make way for Embleton, but went on to become a regular after making his loan from Spurs permanent during the following summer. Now one of the most sought after players outside the Premier League after a stunning campaign in which he scored 15 goals. | Frank Reid Photo: FRANK REID PHOTOGRAPHER 2022
16. SUB - JAY MATETE
Injuries have prevented him building on a solid start to his career at the club, having joined from Fleetwood Town on deadline day in the January window. Won promotion at Plymouth Argyle last season but injury impacted his pre season at Sunderland and then his loan to Oxford United. Sunderland hope he'll be fit to return in pre season. | Frank Reid Photo: Frank Reid
