The Baggies overturned a first-half deficit to win 2-1 at the Stadium of Light, with substitutes Tom Rogic and Daryl Dike scoring after the break.

"It took many, many minutes to adapt to the game,” said Corberan, whose side fell a goal behind after Amad’s 19th-minute penalty. “The beginning of the game was very difficult.

Sunderland was better than us, in every single moment of the game. We tried to press but we didn't arrive on time. We didn't win a lot of challenges in the middle of the pitch.

"We didn't have the rhythm or the tempo of the game, but little by little we started to balance the game. In the second half we balanced the game for us, we played with a lot of personality, commitment, bravery and it helped us to achieve the result we wanted."

Corberan also pointed out this was his side’s first competitive fixture for a month following their World Cup break.

Sunderland, meanwhile, had returned to action nine days earlier when they beat Millwall 3-0 at the Stadium of Light, their second successive victory in the Championship.

“We were playing against a team that had very positive momentum and the last result increased the confidence of them,” Corberan added.

.”They were playing this game just one week after and it’s true that we didn’t play an official game in one month, and sometimes you feel this.

“You never can simulate in the training games the real atmosphere of one game and the difficulties of the game. Today in the first minute we were suffering the difficulties.

“For me the mentality of the players was exceptional and they were able to beat these difficulties and showed a lot of resilience in the game.

“This is something key in football to win games.”

Sunderland will now try and pick themselves up and prepare for a trip to Hull City on Saturday, with Tony Mowbray’s side sitting 11th in the Championship table.
