Lee Johnson’s side defeated Tranmere Rovers in the final of the Papa John’s Trophy ending a 47 year and 10 months Wembley losing streak in the process.

Lynden Gooch grabbed the only goal of the game following a superb through ball by Aiden McGeady.

And there was plenty of reaction from former players to the win.

Bolo Zenden said on one of Sunderland’s Instagram posts last night: “It’s coming home...”

The former Barcelona and Liverpool winger also commented heart, trophy and clapping emojis on pictures of Grant Leadbitter, Chris Maguire and McGeady and Gooch.

Ex-striker Victor Anichebe also sent his congratulations to the American academy graduate.

He said: “Well done @lyndengooch buzzing for you and the team.”

Former Black Cat Vito Mannone also posted a handclap emoji in response to the win, whilst David Meyler and ex-loanee striker Djibril Cisse both posted messages of ‘congrats’ on Sunderland’s official Instagram.
