And yet it has been a bumpy campaign so far, with a youthful group showing a fair amount of inconsistency and with Tony Mowbray departing the club in early December.
With the season just passing the halfway stage, we’ve reviewed the progress of each player to make a Championship appearance so far...

21. NAZARIY RUSYN
There have been flashes from Rusyn, particularly in a promising display against Birmingham, but like the other strikers in the squad he has struggled to find consistency. A lot more to come in the second half of the season C- Photo: Frank Reid

22. LUIS HEMIR
Has found the intensity of the Championship challenging and hasn’t been able to build on the encouraging pre-season form he produced. Is clearly a talented finisher, but has spurned his best chances so far in the league. D Photo: Frank Reid

23. JEWISON BENNETTE
His assist for Rigg against Southampton was one of the highlights of the season so far but in truth it has been a difficult one for the youngster, who has struggled to break through into the first team with competition for places growing. A January loan move looks the best option, but it’s imperative that Sunderland pick the right environment. D Photo: FRANK REID

24. ELIEZER MAYENDA
Hasn’t really had much of a chance to make an impression due the major hamstring injury he picked up in his first training session. Showed flashes of real talent in his recent cameo appearances, though some inexperience too. C Photo: Frank Reid
