Alex Neil’s men had a 1-0 lead coming into the clash at Hillsborough from the first leg but Sheffield Wednesday went a goal up during the second game, which levelled the scores on aggregate.
In the dying embers, however, Jack Clarke skipped down the left hand side to set-up Patrick Roberts, who stabbed home the goal to take Sunderland to Wembley for the final against Wycombe Wanderers.
