Two former Black Cats youth team stars are set for a return to the Stadium of Light.

That’s after the news dropped that Machester United’s U21s will join Sunderland Bradford and Lincoln City in Group F of the Papa John’s Trophy.

The Black Cats won the competition last season defeating Tranmere Rovers 1-0 to end the Wearsider’s 48-year Wembley hoodoo.

But the clash against Manchester United’s youth side could see two former Sunderland youngsters return to the Stadium of Light.

Joe Hugill and Logan Pye both swapped the North East for Manchester back in 2020, joining up with the club’s U18s side.

However, both players have enjoyed success in the North West and could well find themselves facing up against their old club next season.

Lee Johnson also learned that his side will travel to League Two outfit Port Vale in the first round of Carabao Cup at the beginning of August.
