Transfer gossip: Roma plot shock raid for Sunderland’s £30m record signing Habib Diarra
Roma are reportedly considering Habib Diarra if Manu Koné leaves, but Sunderland expect their £30m man to play a major role
Sunderland midfielder Habib Diarra has reportedly emerged as a potential transfer target for Roma as the Italian club assess their options ahead of the new season.
According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Diarra is on Roma’s list of possible midfield reinforcements should Manu Koné leave the Stadio Olimpico during the remainder of the summer window. Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin is also said to be under consideration.
The report does not suggest Roma have made an offer or opened formal talks with Sunderland at this stage. Their interest in another midfielder also appears to depend on Koné departing, meaning Diarra is currently being viewed as a possible replacement rather than an immediate priority.
Diarra only joined Sunderland from Strasbourg last summer in a deal worth around £30million, making him the club’s record signing. The 22-year-old signed a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light and remains tied to the Black Cats until 2030.

As things stand, Diarra is expected to play a significant role for Régis Le Bris this season. Sunderland are not believed to be actively looking to move him on and would be in a strong negotiating position should Roma decide to firm up their reported interest.
The midfielder progressed through the academies at Mulhouse and Strasbourg before making his senior Ligue 1 debut in October 2021. He later established himself in Strasbourg’s first team before completing his move to Wearside in July 2025. The midfielder has now returned to training with Sunderland after enjoying an extended break following the World Cup.
