As a city, Sunderland can now lay claim to producing one of the football world’s brightest young stars… sort of.

Gio Reyna currently plays for German giants Borussia Dortmund.

The attacking midfielder assisted future superstar Erling Haaland’s second goal in Dortmund’s 2-1 victory over PSG in the Champions League last night.

I’m sure you’ve done the math by now. His name is Reyna, he was born in Sunderland just shy of two decades ago, has American heritage and plays football…

Yes, Gio’s father is ex-Sunderland, Manchester City and Rangers midfielder Claudio Reyna. Indeed, being born in the North East makes Reyna Jr eligible for Gareth Southgate and any future England manager.

There is also interest from Portugal and Argentina's national teams through his grandparents. So, that makes Reyna Jr eligible for England, America, Portugal and Argentina – take your pick, kid!

The interesting facts don’t end there, however. Gio is short for Giovanni, with Reyna Sr confirming his son was named after his former Ibrox teammate, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, an ex-Barcelona, Rangers and Holland legend.

Throw into the mix his mother Danielle Egan, too – a fine footballer in her own right and a United States international.

So - Gio’s dad was an international footballer, as was his mother, he’s named after a legend and is playing alongside superstars like Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland. When you factor into the equation his Wearside heritage, Reyna Jr just might make the big time!
