That’s according to the Sheffield Star, who claim that while new Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic is keen to assess his squad before dipping into the market.

The recently-relegated side are understood to be targeting two new central defenders during the summer transfer window, with Sanderson named on a list of potential targets as the club prepare for life back in the Championship.

But that appears to be as far as the club’s interest in the Wolves youngster has gone at this moment in time – with incomings unlikely before Jokanovic begins work on July 1.

Sanderson remains under contract at Molineux for a further season but has seen his path to the first team in the Midlands further blocked by the arrival of Colombian youngster Yerson Mosquera last week.

Reports have suggested that the youngster could be allowed to complete a permanent exit this summer, and Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson has previously made no secret of the fact he would be interested in a deal for Sanderson were it possible.

Speaking in February after rumours of interest in a permanent deal surfaced, Johnson said: “We love Dion and he's ours for the short term, but obviously part of our job is to help develop him for Wolves if they deem that they want him to stay on.

"We wish him all the best [with that] of course.

"Of course, if not, then a club like our would of course be interested in a young talent like Dion.”

But the rumoured £2million fee could prove stifling for a number of clubs, with several Championship sides also rumoured to be keen on a deal.

Premier League outfit Newcastle United are also known to have watched Sanderson at times last season with his form on Wearside catching the eye of a number of top flight clubs.

Sanderson is known to have enjoyed his time at the Stadium of Light and developed a number of close friendships – but when quizzed on his future has always reiterated his desire to play for Wolves.
