He has been extensively trialing new systems in pre-season and it looks like it could well be a back three for the opening day. In his weekly column, Phil Smith takes a guess at the XI as things stand and a closer look at the big decisions still to be made...
5. LWB - Denver Hume
Not looked his sharpest so far but perfect for this system and has the total trust of his manager. Will get a major opportunity in the early part of the season and showed enough last season to suggest he is capable of taking it. Photo: Ian Horrocks
6. CM - Dylan McGeouch
Returned determined to make his mark and looked good in Portugal, playing at a decent tempo and executing some dangerous passes. Photo: Ian Horrocks
7. CM - Grant Leadbitter
Getting the balance in midfield is a big challenge for Ross and there will be some questions over whether these two could play as a pair in the bustle of a League One game. Leadbitter, though, looks in good shape and has been typically composed in his appearances so far. Photo: Ian Horrocks
8. LW - Elliot Embleton
The inside-left position looks perfect for Aiden McGeady, giving him plenty of defensive cover and the freedom to drift into dangerous areas. If he isn’t yet fit, there could be a major opportunity for Embleton who brought such eye-catching vision with his passing in Portugal. On current form, there has to be a space for him somewhere.
