A troubled campaign on the pitch has seen the departure of Jack Ross and a very difficult for Phil Parkinson.
Nevertheless, an open division means the Black Cats remain very much in contention for the top six at least, with signs of life in recent games.
Phil Smith assesses the campaign so far, player by player...…
1. JON McLAUGHLIN
He remains one of the division’s best goalkeepers, but it has been a difficult season so far with uncertainty over a new contract that is still to materialise. There have been some uncharacteristic errors but encouraging signs in recent weeks that his best form is returning. Still an enormous asset ahead of a crucial few months. 2. LEE BURGE
Will reflect on a satisfying first few months at the club. Performed very well in the cups and on occasions in the league. Work to be done on his distribution bt has more than proven himself and won rave reviews for his attitude and application behind the scenes. B Photo: FRANK REID
3. JACK BALDWIN
Out of favour under Jack Ross at the start of the campaign and a loan move to Salford City has seemingly been blighted by injury. Seems certain to leave the club this summer. Was genuinely superb in his one appearance, the thumping Carabao Cup win over Burnley. D Photo: FRANK REID
4. LAURENS DE BOCK
An excellent defensive display against Sheffield United raised hopes but the battle to get to match fitness was always going to be an uphill one. Ultimately unconvincing and returned to Leeds in search of a move back to Belgium. C- Photo: FRANK REID
