That was always going to be the case given that Sunderland' s clear priority is League One promotion, but an early run in the Carabao Cup only heightens the need to protect some senior players.
At Sincil Bank there will be a blend of senior and U23 players, with a number of the former away on international duty.
Elliott Dickman's side also play an important league game against West Brom on Monday night, meaning there is a need to find a balance to ensure both teams are competitive.
There will undoubtedly be chances for a good core of his group, however, and those openings could yet increase significantly in the remaining group games.
So with that in mind, we run you through a (not exhaustive) guide to some fo the players you could see feature...

5. TYRESE DYCE
Sunderland's pre-season shortage of full backs meant the summer signing from West Brom had more senior exposure than he might have expected. Dyce is quick and a real threat driving forward in possession, though those appearances showed he understandably has work to do in terms of his all-round defensive game. It would be a surprise if he wasn't used at some stage, either to ease Denver Hume's workload at left back as he steps back into senior football, or on the wing. Photo: Frank Reid

6. SAM WILDING
An experienced holding midfielder at U23 level who was an important part of Dickman's side last year. Made his debut against Fleetwood Town in the same competition. Is athletic and combative, and acquitted himself well in pre-season. Photo: Frank Reid

7. HARRISON SOHNA
Sunderland recruited Sohna from Aston Villa and he has already showcased his technical ability. Usually plays as the more advanced of the two central midfielders, and is quick enough to break into the box. A tidy player, though one still in the early stages of his Black Cats' journey. 8. ETHAN KACHOSA
Dickman and his staff signed signed from Leeds United. He is very versatile, and can play in any position down either flank. Physically he has some maturation to do but there is no doubting his pace and he has technical quality. At this stage of his development you'd expect in senior football he might be best served on the wing. At 18 he very much has time on his side and is one of the younger members of Dickman's group.
